Breakout Session Title: Identifying the Best Value for Money Strategies to Reduce Childhood Obesity

Session Details:

Recent research projects that over half of all children today will have obesity by the time they are adults. There are a number of strategies across settings that have strong evidence that they can help people eat healthier, move more and reduce excess weight gain. The Childhood Obesity Intervention Cost-Effectiveness Study (CHOICES) at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health has developed interactive tools and resources, including a strategy comparison tool and map of state/local strategy profiles, to help health agencies both identify strategies with strong evidence for improving health and compare their relative health impact, population reach, implementation cost and cost-effectiveness. Attendees will have opportunities to use the interactive tools during this session to help inform their own decision making to support healthy lifestyles.

Session Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify principals of cost-effectiveness analysis relevant to nutrition and physical activity policies and programs.
  2. Understand how to locate and use tools that provide information on a menu of strategies that have strong evidence for impact on health, including relative comparison of impact on health, population reach, implementation cost and cost effectiveness.
  3. Understand how these methods and results can be useful for state and local health agencies to enable more informed decision making.
